Medicare Penalties and Exceptions
Understanding Late Enrollment Penalties
Medicare may charge a late enrollment penalty if you do not sign up for certain parts of Medicare when you are first eligible. These penalties are added to your monthly premiums and, in many cases, may continue for as long as you have Medicare.
Part B Late Enrollment Penalty
If you delay enrolling in Medicare Part B and do not have creditable health coverage, you may pay a penalty for each full 12-month period you could have had Part B but did not enroll. This amount is added to your monthly premium for as long as you have Part B.
Part D Late Enrollment Penalty
If you go 63 days or more without prescription drug coverage that is considered creditable, Medicare may add a Part D penalty to your monthly premium. The penalty is calculated based on how long you
went without creditable coverage and continues as long as you have a Part D plan.
Exceptions to Late Enrollment Penalties
Certain situations may allow you to avoid or reduce Medicare late enrollment penalties. Common exceptions include:
• Creditable Coverage: If you had health or drug coverage that meets Medicare’s minimum standards, you may not owe a penalty when you later enroll.
• Special Enrollment Periods (SEPs): If you delayed enrollment due to active employment or other qualifying circumstances, you may be eligible for a penalty-free enrollment period.
• Low Income Assistance: Individuals who qualify for Extra Help may have Part D penalties waived.
• Medicare Savings Programs: In some situations, enrollment in these programs may reduce or eliminate penalties.
• Administrative or Processing Errors: If Medicare determines you received incorrect information or experienced a processing delay, penalties may be removed.
